Personal Lubrication

How Do I Properly Use Lubricants?
There are many uses for personal lubrication, but many people do not know the facts about Astroglide and other such personal lubricants. Personal lubricants are often used for intercourse, but a new use is to treat vaginal dryness. Vaginal dryness can occur at any time in a female's life, but it often occurs during pregnancy or following childbirth. It is a very uncomfortable condition and at some point in a woman's life she is likely to experience vaginal dryness. It is also sometimes caused by low estrogen levels.

Some symptoms such as vaginal itching, burning or irritation and pain, whether constant or intercourse-related, should be brought to the attention of your physician or medical care giver, and may be treated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Vaginal dryness may also be alleviated by increasing your water intake or with Kegel exercises to increase circulation to the pelvic area and help boost production of vaginal moisture. Using a personal lubricant in conjunction with any of the foregoing is recommended.

There are certain personal lubricants that should be avoided. Never use cooking oils, Vasaline, or petrolium-based products. These products harbor bacteria, causing yeast infections among others, and can cause the breakdown of the latex in condoms. Never use oil-based lubricants. The more appropriate choice is to use water-based personal lubrication. Astroglide is one example of a water-based personal lubricant. Some others are K-Y Jelly, Aqualube, and Maintain by Durex. These lubes are all water-based and safe to use with latex condoms. Astroglide is a very popular brand manufactured by Biofilm. Astroglide, K-Y Jelly, Aqualube, and Durex Maintain can all be purchased in the Lubricants section of Undercover Condoms. How to use lubricants safely:
  • What are Personal Lubricants - Personal Lubricants are over-the-counter substances designed to relieve the discomfort of vaginal dryness, enhance the pleasure of intimate activity, and provide lubrication during non-sterile medical examinations.
  • Why Use Personal Lubricants - Hold the latex dam over the vulva or anus during oral stimulation, making sure that the latex remains in place. Always keep the same side against the body. Do not share or reuse.
  • Safe Lubricants - Do not use oil-based lubricants such as Vaseline petroleum jelly, mineral oil, vegetable oil or cold cream as these can cause the breakdown of the latex in dental dams and condoms. This may result in leakage.
  • Recommended Lubes - Some quality lubricants are Astroglide, Aqualube, Maintain by Durex, K-Y Jelly, and Rain flavored lubricants. All are available on the Undercover Condoms Lubricants page.
